So, if I understand this correctly, special precautions must be taken for an electrification of Cal Train or Calif. high-speed rail wben in the vicintity of B.A.R.T.
To re-captulate, in a few words, what the "Old Pole Burner" said: Large single-phase loads created by the sub-stations of an a.c. railroad electrification will cause powerful harmonics in the utility company's transmission lines that feed those sub-stations. Those same transmission lines will feed B.A.R.T. rectifier sub-stations and the harmonics will feed through the rectifiers and into the d.c. third rail. When the d.c. current powers the cars, from the positive third rail, the negative return is through the running rails which will receive the harmonics. The train detection signals and the train speed command signals that are in the running rails will become masked or over-shadowed by the power harmonics UNLESS the special precautions are taken. I am sort of assuming that the entity that CREATES the problem harmonics is the entity that should PAY for the cost of the precautions needed to prevent or suppress the harmonics.
