The Burlington Northern "secondary main" from Gillette thru Alliance to Lincoln wasn't in much better shape when the first coal trains started rolling. If the MILW had held on, it might have been able to make a go of it. I think the real issue, besides track condition, would have been vertical clearances for double stacks. With all the tunnels it would have been a lot of work, but if the electrification had remained, it would have been a nightmare to raise all that wire!!!
