Hey Mook- Regarding that Golden Gate Bridge 50th Anniversary celebration:
"I was there early that morning. Caught a ten-car BART train at 2:30 AM at Oakland's "Rockridge Station". Got into downtown San Francisco soon after and made a bee-line for the Bridge. Craziest thing I ever did in my life.
Regarding the weight issue--
"Charlotte Mailliard", Chief of Protocol for San Francisco, was in-charge of the whole party that day. She had figured out that some 90,000 persons would come for the big WALK across the span. She guessed WRONG, big time. There were one million people on that thing. Fact !!
One group of party goers, dressed in period costumes, set up a big dinner table at mid-span and had a full-course dinner with wine and everything.
Afterwards, we adjourned to Crissy Field and watched this huge parade of antique cars, trucks and buses. Then looked around Crissy Field and Fort Mason for a while and went home.
What a crazy, but FUN day !! Yes, with that many people, the bridge sagged quite a bit.
