Don't make the false assumption that some of these people opposed to SMART are envrironmentalist's, as they "claim" to be. Real environmentalist's support more sustainable transportation alternatives and most of these will support SMART. Maybe this is just another case of Nimby lawyers, in bed with an extreme right wing faction, who don't give a rat's ass about the environment. Some of these groups, including a few "envrionmental" groups, are littloe more than paid schill's, with lots of contributions from special interests, just fine with the status quo of $5 gas.
