I would say for many people in Marin County, maybe even a majority, the cost of gas is really not at issue and is not something that is causing them any real pain. More to the point is concern that an efficient transportation system might give the those in the lower levels of society some feeling that maybe their needs really matter, that getting around and to work easily and in some comfort is actually possible, and then maybe there should even be affordable housing close to work---all really subversive ideas from the perspective of the rich Marinites. So best to oppose SMART.
