The CSS&SB line in Michigan City is one hundred years old--I was at a Centenary conference inb South Bend in June--that is it preceeded the buildout of the city and in that era grade crossing safety was laissez-faire. In the same era Illinois Central's then steam commuter line in the median of 71st on tthe South Side of Chicago had few grade crossings you just crossed the tracks as in an open field. At the conference, RR officials spoke of wanting to reroute the line to eliminate the street running.
