Theres a good post on here about BARTs top speed about half way down the page,

80 was the designed top speed for the system (never 100)

It still travels that fast on occasion but the scheduled speed is 70, still one of the fastest transit systems in the country. The difference in top speed probably makes very little difference in the schedule since the track speed is 80 is only between a few stations.

As far as appearance thats a subjective issue but I happen to think the cars still look sleek and modern. BART was an extremely innovative system at the time it was built and is still the envy of just about anyone that rides it from around the country...

I have not heard any serious discussion of extending it to the north bay.
