Grade separation

Transit opponents complain (among other things) that people will get killed in auto-light rail collisions if there is not a grade-separated right-of-way. And the answer to that argument is:

Yup. They will.

But if you don't build the light rail, then people are going to drive to get to their destination, and there are going to be more auto accidents, and people are going to die that way. The light rail doesn't need to be perfectly grade separated, it just has to make crossing accidents unlikely enough that it's a net win.
