It is important to remember that in 1962 BART was unique. No "built from the ground up" transit system had been built in the U.S. for decades. There was also a desire, common in the sixties, to use as much technology and automation as possible so as not to be dismissed as old-fashoned. BART designers made some assumptions that turned out not to be correct, but they were writing the book as they went. Every transit system built since BART has benefitted from BART's experience.
