Considering the vast sums of money that have been lavished on BART I see it as an underperforming disappointment. They tried to reinvent the wheel and failed in my opinion. In view of all the hype and all the concrete poured its top speed is too low and it is too noisy - it is definitely not the Jetsons panacea that was promised to the voters in 1962. It makes me worry that the Bay Area suffers from having too much money to spend, like Microsoft or Google. Kudos to LA, which is making the Bay Area look bizarro when it comes to transport.

By contrast tho Caltrain to San Jose looks very promising. If we can get 4 tracks in, electrified and grade separated that would be what BART should have been. If BART just had to go third rail they should have at least done an exact copy of the NYC subway.

IMHO there is a special spot in transit infamy reserved for those worthies who saddled the Bay Area with Russian broad gauge.
