The latest LA Times article in an oh-by-the-way says the train was going "nearly 70 mph" not long before it ran the red signal. It would have had a yellow (which the crew in the cab called) about two miles previously. This supports the theory that the jerks (sorry, the crew) thought the BNSF train would clear the CP before they got there -- no need to slow to 40 for that pesky yellow!

This also provides a context for the SCRRA rule revision mentioned on another forum, where it now says when you see a yellow, that means slow down RIGHT AWAY!
