Sprague lake has 2 privately-owned "resort" campgrounds. West end of the lake is right next to the tracks--and the freeway. East end is quieter--also farther from the tracks. (Note: Sprague Lake was poisoned this fall to poison off the trash fish and re-build it as a trophy fish lake. Should be REALLY easy to get a site this year.)
Utilized Camping places--still legal (as far as I know):
Tehachapi Loop (inside the loop)
Just west of West Hilgard in the Blue Mountains.
Near wye tail at Kamela, (summit of) Blue Mountains.
Big cut north of Athol, ID on the Funnel.
MP 317.5, west of Portola, CA.
If you can get into Stanford Curve west of Truckee (ALL the way in)--really nice.
Same road in, just branch off earlier--at the tunnel at Andover, where the tracks come out of Stanford Canyon and pass above Donner Lake.
Utilized Camping Places--known to now be closed off, or made REALLY hard to get into:
Cajon Summit, next to the ex-SP.
East end of the old Granite Tunnel on the Funnel.
Access road to Belmont Tunnel--Belmont, NE (don't remind my wife about that one).
Above the first curve east of the "Big Hole", Tunnel 41, at Donner Summit. If the road up there is closed, you should still be able to hike up). Historical name, "Eder".
Used to camp at Altamont Summit "back in the day". I doubt it's legal or safe anymore--too close to "civilization" (if you can call it that).
Note: These are all un-official "boonie" camps--absolutely no facilities. Pack-in-in-and-pack-it-out. Wives may or may not have a good time. Kids love 'em. Maybe I was just lucky, but I survived them all.
