Read the NWP business plan. The mining operations at Island Mountain
called for in that plan are far different, far far more
intensive mining than anything that has occurred. Yes, there
was/is a mine at Island Mtn. But the level of operation
called for in the plan (if freight makes it there) is vastly
greater than anything we've seen.
In essence, the mining plan that sits in a Trinity County
file calls for taking down the mountain over 30 years or more.
Apparently, they have found far more ore in the mountain
than there was previously known. And the ore could be
used to shore up the levees in the Delta. That's why
Skip Berg is part of the business plan. He wants to develop
the port to haul the ore. And he's got a federal earmark
to help him do it, if he can also get rights for a ferry
terminal. (note: another battle for sure, if he makes
any progress)
Pretty cool having all of these taxpayer funds being used
to generate profits for private enterprise. Kind of like
the banks, eh? Except in this case, taxpayers will be left
with the environmental bill associated with the mining.
Seems to me we'd be better off cutting a deal
with NWP to provide freight service UP TO Willits and
converting the row in canyon to a first class trail system.
It would be world class and generate far more economic
benefits to surrounding communities than freight service.
