It's not "flying blind". Trains have been operated this way for over a hundred years, and even today on any given day in North America, hundreds of trains safely travel thousands of miles on CONTROLLED TRACK in dark territory. Is it perfect? No. Is CTC perfect? No. Will PTC be perfect? Of course not.
I have personally logged thousands of miles running at CFR authorized maximum speeds in dark territory with nary an incident. You have to be a professional and be incredibly focused on your tasks, but it's a good system for lower density corridors.
In the case of the flub by the CSX crew, I'm sure they will find some sort of underlying factor or factors that laid the foundation for this to happen or some sort of safety culture issue. I wouldn't be surprised if this is somehow a legacy of EHH's "precision railroading" policies, with the entire transportation department overly fatigued and in a state of disarray due to too many big changes happening at one time. I guarantee the NTSB will be looking into the contributing factors and will find something other than the simple fact that they were running under dark territory rules.
