By your logic it's okay for us to kill and injure a few passengers, and have a millions in property damage, because we have passenger trains operating at that speed, flying blind, as just occurred?

So, where in the US, do we operate intercity passenger service that we do not at least block signal protection? I am curious as to how much of Amtrak is operated in dark territory at 59 mph. with no protection for wrong switches and broken rails? I have a feeling, based on the thousands of miles of Amtrak operations I'm familiar with, that this is not the issue you make it out to be.

Yes, I would require making operating speed a function of the level of signal protective systems in place, and operating, on all routes that carry passengers. And, I wouldn't be surprised, that after the analysis of how this crew was lead into a trap and killed, that this will be a likely NTSB recommendation.

If such systems are not functioning, as they were not in this case, then why not require safe operation under such circumstances, at no more restricted speed?

Maybe it's my more conservative SP training, but when we had dark signals on a mainline, we operated at restricted speed, and thus, were able to "stop short of a switch not properly lined......"

Real time command and control capabilities, which is a possible solution with some types of PTC applications, which can detect track circuit interruption from a broken rail, or from the electric switch locks showing the switch is not properly lined, and that could potentially offer an equivalent or greater level of protection.

And, as to your "logic", that a little collateral damage is okay in cases like this, because to operate safely would require us to spend money to do it, do you also oppose removing gas from fracking oils, because it costs money to make transporting that safe, too? Yeah, it's definitely my "logic" that's flawed......?

I'm happily retired these days, so I'm not really "in charge" of much of anything anymore. Although, I still do get paid my hourly rate, on occasion, when folks I've worked for over the years have questions about how to prevent these types of things.
