The problem with Siemens Chargers and/or Cal Cars or Venture cars is that the CAHSR segment has highway-style grades of 4% and more typical of TGV style engineering, which requires motor trucks under the coaches. A single diesel is not going to manage 125 mph with conventional trailer coaches on that infrastructure. Brightline can run 125 mph with that equipment in Florida because the line is efrfectively level. They can't use that equipment, for instance, in the I-15 median to Las Vegas due to the highway grades. That will have to be TGV technology. I actually wonder how much time can be saved on the 119 mile CAHSR vis-a-vis the current BNSF route without full TGV style trains on the CAHSR -- but even with a cross platform connection, how much time would be saved Emeryville-Bakersfield even with a full TGV implementation on the 119 miles?

Rumor was CHSR would poison pill the segment by building to standards that can't support the weight of traditional diesels or dual modes But 4% grades are not a problem 08-03-2023 - 19:46

BOB2, can you weigh in on this "Short 4% grades will kill travel time" nonsense? Jimmie 08-05-2023 - 14:19
I thought high speed rail didn't use steep grades on short segments precisely to avoid the rollercoaster effect Jimmie 08-05-2023 - 14:22
