Looking at the ACE schedule, Train ACE01 leaves Tracy at 0441, Livermore 0515, or 34 minutes to go 21 miles, or 37 mph. Various estimates of the Altamont grade give .8% to 1%. Let's say this is nothing special even for conventional rail engineering, but it gives an idea of how ineffective it would be to try to run a conventional diesel with conventional coaches on high speed right of way, even with just short stretches of 2-1/2% to 4%. I'm still willing to bet that an informed estimate of a train with Siemens Charger and Venture cars wouldn't be as fast on the CAHSR infrostructure as on the existing BNSF.
