SJRRC is under contract to Caltrans to convert old F59s that had their engine blocks cut to cabbage cars.
However, for their old ACE F40s that have been replaced by Chargers with CARL moyer funds they got a federal earmark to study converting them to battery zero emission locomotives, or near zero emission by keeping the HEP motor to help with recharging.
So there definitely seems like there are some possibilities, even if it is using old locomotives for battery tenders to reduce emissions in a consist like the BNSF pilot from a couple years ago.
Of course, CalSTA and DRMT are doubling down on hydrogen ZEMUs from Stadler that really haven't been proven. We'll see how they work put for Arrow in San Bernadino, but unless they are just used for the relatively flat Chico to Merced extended Valley Rail route they don't seem to have the range to go up sustained grades.

Rumor was CHSR would poison pill the segment by building to standards that can't support the weight of traditional diesels or dual modes
|
But 4% grades are not a problem |
