Yeah Chris, I should have just set the air, let the ude happen, and stopped... Today they would, less the black box, would rat out the excess speed...

The approach ABS signal was a searchlight, and it would always start its cycle with 7 flashing yellows. If you were coming westbound down Acolita grade with a "balanced" train (minimum set and dynamics operating together) at 70 mph., depending on train length/tonnage, you could usually release your set, and keep control with the dynamics once it turned green.

The grade began to level out below the approach ABS signal, and since the next A signal would not be a restrictive yellow (it would be clear (or a flashing yellow if you were following another train), you would not have to keep the air brakes set to be able to bring the train down to 40 mph. before you passed the yellow A signal you would encounter at the east end of Niland. It was more of an indicator/reminder to keep you set until you passed the clear ABS approach signal.
