Also, even if California gets 150 mph. capable dual mode Siemens like Amtrak is ordering for branching off of the NEC,which would allow sustained 140 mph service from Chowchilla to Waso on the current stranded investment. Again, those train sets are mostly for existing routes engineered to conventional rail standards, especially New York-Scranton over the former Lackawanna Cutoff in New Jersey, but once you cross the Delaware, it's a mountain railroad. Expansion of services in Virginia contemplate new passenger routes paralleling existing freight rail, but also to conventional rail standards. Other Amtrak expansion is going to be over conventional 110-125 mph track, not TGV lines with highway grades, which require completely new style trains.

Rumor was CHSR would poison pill the segment by building to standards that can't support the weight of traditional diesels or dual modes But 4% grades are not a problem 08-03-2023 - 19:46

BOB2, can you weigh in on this "Short 4% grades will kill travel time" nonsense? Jimmie 08-05-2023 - 14:19
