Yeah, and let's get the line re-opened from Miami to Key West while we're at it.
The Castroville-Monterey line is a realistic candidate for a re-opening. It had passenger service until May 1971.
As we've seen here, its worst enemies are the NIMBYs who, for whatever reason, don't want to see it happen. I dunno. Maybe they're getting money under the table from the highway and auto interests. Maybe they're the ones who bike and walk their dog on the trail and are resistant to change. Who knows?
It IS doable. If they can turn the Highgrove-Perris-Hemet line into a rebuilt, relatively high speed commuter line, I really can see no reason why the Castroville-Monterey line would be such a far-fetched proposal. Mileage-wise, the two lines are about the same.
Oh, but then there's that bridge that needs to be replaced and retrofitted for earthquakes.
