The San Rafael to San Francisco thing was just rhetorical joke.
But there is a nice big Larkspur ferry terminal that SMART doesn't go to. The ferry goes to San Francisco. But SMART won't go the ferry. They stop five minutes away by car, ten by foot. Train and ferry schedules won't be synced, linked, or chinked. Big wait for your ferry to leave.
Even when you get on the ferry and ride to San Francisco--sitting down because SMART gets there before the Marin commuters who have to drive there and thus will be standing up when SMART commuters take over the ferries, pushing a lot of one-time ferry commuters back onto the road forcing them to take bridges into SF, too--you'll be arriving on piers out back of the Ferry Building that the ferris used to pull right up to and expel thousands of commuters into.
And on the trip home you get to stand in a long line to get on boat. Outside. Not what it used to be. But still it's something. And SMART could find some way to extend to it.
