Since the politicians and their assorted minions (conservative, liberal, etc.--it doesn't matter) are going to do whatever they want anyway, I think of it this way: since taxpayers are going to get stuck paying for the NWP, the Santa Cruz branch, etc., we might as well enjoy it. As railfans (surely a special-interest group), we get to chase, photograph, ride, or simply admire these operations while all our fellow citizens help pay for it. Think that's unfair? You help pay for public schools whether you have kids in them or not. Besides, if SMART, the NWP, and the Santa Cruz vanish tomorrow, I don't think you'll be getting a refund on your taxes. When you go railfanning the BNSF or UP, do you send them a check for the value of the entertainment you received from chasing their trains?
