Very interesting stuff, Judah. I learned something new about easements as they relate to Railroads. I'm guessing the 'other' 15% of RR right of way was either land grant, or purchased outright ??? Can a utility take over a railroad easement they already shared, if the RR abandons its' tracks but the utility remains ??? I'm thinking of Milwaukee Road Lines West R of W in WA. state, that Puget Power ( now Puget Sound Energy ) ran power poles down the middle of, after BN bought the tracks from bankruptcy court in 1980, then abandoned in 1987. Although I'm not totally sure, I've been told Milwaukee had granted Puget Power use of the overhead transmission lines in exchange for cheaper electricity rates.
