Certainly nothing is going to happen on this issue until the extension to north of Sir Francis Drake is opened. I dunno how Larkspur will react to pressure for extending somewhat south. It could depend on ABAG demands for low income housing and how many residents of Larkspur use or will use SMART.
You would not want to veer off substantially towards the ferry terminal so as to impede or preclude extending towards Corte Madera and Mill Valley, etc. That would be cutting the locals(as in South Marin residents)out of this for the benefit of farther northeners. I guess you could offer the "locals" a bigger parking lot at the ferry terminal as a consolation.
The ferries are cute, fun and very touristic but also require a hefty subsidy. Luckily the Bay Area is much richer now I guess than when the ferries were abandoned. One problem tho is the neighbors of the terminal not liking at all the bow wave of the ferries; thus limiting the speed. I rode them at the beginning when they were IIRC burning thru 200 gallons of kerosene per trip with I think 3 propulsion "engines" operating. Like the proverbial bat outta hell but very spendy and the next door neighbors sued over wave damage.
